For the sake of full disclosure, in preseaon when Tony Romo injured his back, some of my closest friends and I were having a discussion that we wished that Dakota, Dak, Prescott had a year or two to learn behind Tony Romo before he took the starting quaterback job. Mind you, those of us who wanted Dak to learn little nuances about playing quaterback in the NFL wasn’t because we did not have faith in Dak ability because we had watch his entire college carreer. We witnessed Dak’s quaterback prowess take Mississippi State University to a number one college football ranking. If I’m not mistaken Mississippi State University had never been ranked number one in college football. So, all the pressures that go along with playing in the South Eastern Conference will be left to a future discussion. Our premise was that we felt that Steve Young benefited from learning behind Joe Montana. We felt that Tom Brady benefited from learning things from Drew Bledsoe. We felt that Tony Romo learned things from Drew Bledsoe. We felt that Arron Rogers learned a great deal from Brett Favre. The examples can go on and on. So, with that premise, when Romo injured his spine in preseason, we prayed for the best for Dak, but based on the examples I just gave we thought it may be better for a rookie to play behind a proven great or good starter before taking over the starting postion.
I’m delighted to report that Dakota, Dak, Prescott has to our delight proven us wrong. Through five games, Dak’s record is 4-1. He has seven TDs and one INT. His QBR is 84.1, and his passing rating is 103.9. Tony Romo’s passing ratting is 97.1. Without question Tony Romo has a longer body or work; so, it’s hard to compare stats. With that being said no one can deny that with Dak at QB, the offense is hitting on all cylinders. Nevertheless, the Dallas cowboys are faced with a huge dilemma once Romo comes off of injury reserve. No one can deny that when Tony Romo is healthy and on the field that Dallas wins games. So, the only knock against Tony is injuries that is if you can call injuries a knock. It’s part of playing football. The other truth that no one can deny is that Dallas is winning with Dak and because of Dak. There used to be a tradition in sport especially for good to great starting quaterback that they would not loose their staring job to injury. With that being said, do you change something that does not need a fix for the sake of tradition? Jerry Jones said that Tony Romo gets his starting job back once he’s healed. My opinion is that Dallas has a huge dilemma. Does Dallas return Tony Romo to the starting quaterback position once he come off of injury reserve or does Dallas keep Dakota, Dak, Prescott as their starter? Let me know what you would do if you were Jerry Jones, the General Manger, or the coach of the Dallas cowboys.
